Is Therapy Right For Me?

Welcome to the Red Earth Blog

I created this space to share reflections, resources and insights into therapy and mental health. My hope is that it becomes a place where you can find clarity, feel less alone, and gain a sense of what it might be like to work with me.

I know that starting therapy can feel like a big step. Many people wonder if it’s the right investment of their time, energy and money, or even whether they “deserve” support in the first place. In this inaugural blog post, I want to demystify therapy, highlight the many ways it can help, and give you a sense of my ethos as a therapist: warm, collaborative, and focused on what matters most to you.

In short, this post tackles a common question: Is therapy right for me?

Is therapy right for me?

Therapy isn’t only for people going through a crisis or living with a mental health diagnosis. It can be a powerful support for anyone who wants to better understand themselves, improve relationships, manage stress, or navigate life transitions.

For many, therapy is less about “fixing” something and more about creating space to grow, reflect and find healthier ways of moving through the world. It offers a confidential, non-judgmental space where you can talk openly, explore patterns, and build skills to support your wellbeing.

Not everyone needs therapy at every point in their lives, but almost everyone can benefit from it at some stage. Think of it as an investment in yourself — one that doesn’t promise a quick fix, but instead fosters long-term change, greater resilience, and a deeper understanding of who you are.

Therapy Myth-busting: Clearing Up Common Misconceptions

There are plenty of myths about what therapy is and who it’s for. Let’s talk about it!

Myth 1: Therapy is only for people with severe mental illness

Reality: Therapy is invaluable for those living with mental illness, but it’s just as beneficial for everyday challenges. Many people seek therapy for personal growth, relationships, work stress or simply to gain deeper self-awareness.

Myth 2: Therapy is just talking to a friend

Reality: A therapist is a trained professional with specialised knowledge and skills. Unlike a friend, a therapist provides an objective, confidential and non-judgmental space. We use evidence-based techniques to help you identify patterns, develop coping strategies, and facilitate lasting change. The relationship is professional, focused on your growth, and bound by ethical guidelines.

Myth 3: Therapy is a quick fix

Reality: Therapy is a process, not a one-time event. While some issues may see rapid improvement, deeper-rooted concerns often require time and consistent effort. The goal is sustainable change, which involves learning new skills, processing emotions, and shifting perspectives. It's an investment in your long-term wellbeing.

Myth 4: Therapy is just talking

Reality: While talk therapy is a significant component, modern therapeutic approaches are far more diverse. At Red Earth Counselling, I consider your unique needs and collaborate with you to create the most suitable treatment plan. This can include cognitive and narrative approaches (traditional talk therapy), experiential techniques (like chair work, imagery), and somatic techniques (working with the body, EMDR). My future posts will be about what these techniques I’ve mentioned look like!
